Self-Care Tips for Mental Health

Simple, everyday habits that support emotional well-being and build resilience.

What Is Self-Care?

Self-care means taking deliberate steps to take care of your physical, emotional, and mental health. It is not selfish, it is essential. Consistently practicing self-care can reduce stress, prevent burnout, improve mood, and strengthen your ability to cope with challenges.

Self-care looks different for everyone. The key is finding what works for you and making it a regular part of your routine.

Self-care is a helpful supplement to mental health treatment, but it is NOT a replacement for therapy or medication when those are needed.

Physical Well-Being

Prioritize Sleep

Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Poor sleep is closely linked to anxiety, depression, and difficulty managing emotions. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.

Exercise Regularly

Physical activity releases endorphins, which improve mood naturally. Even a 20-30 minute walk a few times a week can make a meaningful difference. Find an activity you enjoy, it does not have to be the gym.

Eat Well

What we eat affects how we feel. Eating balanced meals with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and protein supports brain health. Limit alcohol, caffeine, and sugary foods, which can worsen anxiety and mood swings.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can cause fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. Drink enough water throughout the day, a simple habit with a real impact on how you feel.

Emotional Well-Being

Journal Your Thoughts

Writing about your feelings can help you process emotions, identify patterns, and gain perspective. You do not need to write perfectly, just freely and honestly. Even five minutes a day can help.

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness means paying full attention to the present moment without judgment. It has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression symptoms. Try a guided meditation app like Headspace, Calm, or Insight Timer.

Set Boundaries

Saying "no" when you are overwhelmed is a healthy skill. Protect your time and energy by setting limits with others when needed. Boundaries are not selfish, they are necessary for well-being.

Take Breaks

Step away from screens, schoolwork, or stressful tasks regularly. Even a 10-minute break to walk outside, listen to music, or stretch can reset your mental state and improve focus.

Social Well-Being

Stay Connected

Social connection is one of the strongest protectors of mental health. Make time to talk with friends, family, or trusted people in your life , even a brief check-in makes a difference.

Ask for Help

Asking for help when you need it is a strength, not a weakness. Reach out to a counselor, teacher, parent, doctor, or friend. You do not have to manage difficult feelings alone.

Volunteer or Give Back

Helping others has been shown to improve mood and reduce feelings of isolation. Volunteering in your community, even for a few hours, can create a sense of purpose and connection.

Mental and Intellectual Well-Being

Pursue a Hobby

Activities you enjoy, art, music, reading, gaming, gardening, cooking , give your mind a healthy outlet and provide a sense of accomplishment and joy.

Limit Social Media

Excessive social media use is linked to increased anxiety, depression, and poor body image, especially among teenagers. Try setting daily limits on your screen time and take regular "digital detox" days.

Spend Time in Nature

Research shows that spending time outdoors, in parks, forests, or near water, reduces stress hormones and improves mood. Even 20 minutes outside can have a measurable effect on well-being.

When Self-Care Is Not Enough

Self-care practices are valuable tools for maintaining mental health, but they are not treatments for clinical mental health conditions. If you are experiencing:
